Fox CEO Claims Ratings Promote Piracy

by Furious
May 4th, 2009

pirate-kidThe Swedish Board of Film Censors gave X-Men Origins: Wolverine a 15 classification, the highest rating the board can give, which prevents anyone under 15 from gaining admittance to the movie. Fox Sweden CEO Hansi Mandoki was obviously upset about the decision since now all those violence-hungry Swedish teenagers can’t get their blood and gore fix.

But Mandoki couldn’t just stop by saying “it is sad that so many fans won’t be able to see the film.” No, he had to keep on whining by claiming “I’m certain the decision will mean more illegal downloading of the film.”

Hearing a studio exec bitch and moan about someone not being able to see a movie, that’s nothing new. No, they’d probably serve up porn to preschoolers if it could turn a profit. They really don’t seem to care who’s …

Is The Cottage A Crime Caper Or A Horror Comedy?

by Furious
March 22nd, 2009

the-cottageMr. Furious (that’s my dad) is a bit of an odd duck, especially when it comes to movies. It’s not really accurate to say he has an eclectic taste, it’s more random than that. Some of his favorite movies include Curly Sue, Dudley Do-Right, and While You Were Sleeping. But he also loves movies filled with nudity and gratuitous violence. His main complaint about Troy wasn’t the heavy focus on Brad Pitt’s oiled body, but that the movie wasn’t nearly bloody enough.

Since he doesn’t watch TV and hasn’t rented a movie in this millennium, he buys a lot of DVDs, especially the ones costing $5 dollars or less. If he doesn’t like the movie he’ll try to pawn it off on me, explaining why I own RPM and Dracula 2000, amongst many other forgettable …

Jackie Chan Exposes China’s Softer Side

by Furious
February 18th, 2009

jackie-chanIt’s been a while since Jackie Chan has been relevant. Once he broke into the US market, he was too bankable to keep on performing all his crazy stunts and seems to have put much more effort into coming up with a wider array of expressive faces to mug at the camera.

His next movie will be a departure from most anything else he’s done, playing a mechanic who goes in search of his girlfriend and ends up working as a killer for the Yakuza. It’s supposed to be heavy on drama and very light on action. Chan himself says it might be about 1% action.

But it looks like even 1% action is too much for China. Shinjuku Incident won’t be released in mainland China because the violence would never make it past the censors. There’s no rating

Sex Crime Of The Century

by Furious
September 20th, 2008

Revenge movies really started to come into their own in the 1970’s. Movies like I Spit on Your Grave, Death Wish, and Coffy featured seemingly normal people who become bloodthirsty maniacs hellbent on retribution. It even crossed genres, such as in High Plains Drifter, a western.

This Date In Movie History

by Furious
September 19th, 2008

September 19th isn’t a day too many people use to reflection on what was going on with movies in years past. It’s kind of in that dead area after Summer and before the ego-stroking award season.

Henry, played by the always great Michael Rooker, is a drifter. He spends time driving and working low-paying jobs. But he’s a little different than your ordinary drifter. Shots of murdered women are intercut with Henry’s menial activities, implying that murder may be his hobby.
