Weekend Report: 17 Is Sweeter The Umpteenth Time Around

seventeenIf it’s a weekend, then by default it’s a good weekend for Hollywood. But it’s much more rare for my predictions to have a good weekend. For a change, this weekend I was close on all three.

To no one’s surprise, 17 Again came out on top this weekend to the tune of $23,722,310. I predicted $26,270,805. $2.5 million- that’s darn near a bullseye for as close as I’ve been lately. People, I should say women, as in 75% of the audience was female, weren’t turned off by the rehashed old man in a kid’s body story. They were actually probably turned on seeing Zac Efron headline his first movie. For real, three-quarters of the [...]

Weekend Report: The Rock Introduces Watchmen To The People’s Armpit

watchmen-sadWell, it appears Watchmen was just a one weekend wonder, dropping off nearly 70% in it’s second weekend. It’s certainly not what the studio wanted, but probably one of the possible outcomes they foresaw, albeit one they didn’t take too seriously or they wouldn’t have invested such a huge chunk of money in the movie. Even if Watchmen will never be called a success and will cause studios to think twice before blowing hundreds of millions on a fairly obscure comic book adaptation, the real casualties here are the expectations of moviegoers that have been building for nearly a year. Despite Watchmen getting decent reviews, it sure ain’t setting the world on fire.

While Watchmen [...]

Weekend Report: Someone Keeps Blarting In The Theater

It happened again. Against all odds, or at least good judgment, Paul Blart: Mall Cop is tops at the box office for the second week in a row, finagling $21,623,182 out of unsuspecting moviegoers. It’s mind-bottling that this movie has made $65 million. Success of this magnitude guarantees more of this drivel. I can’t wait for the sequel- Hank Shart: Parking Lot Attendant.

Needless to say, my prediction of $27,139,887 for Underworld: Rise of the Lycans was off. Underworld ended the weekend in second place with $20,828,511. With all the recent success of horror movies, I really expected it to do better. Maybe My Bloody Valentine’s $10 million cut into it’s profits a little. Or maybe people aren’t all that into the whole vampire [...]

Does “Best Picture” Really Mean Anything?

oscar-pimpNow that the Academy Award nominations have been announced, there are five more movies that will go down in history as those identified by the most widely respected movie adjudication entity as the best made last year. The nominees for Best Picture are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, and Slumdog Millionaire. None of them will appear on the list of the most successful movies of the year- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button currently sits at number 20 for movies released in 2008, but well short of the top 5 as of the announcement of the nominations. It follows that none of them will be near the top in attendance [...]

Public Domain Movie Of The Week: The Kid

By 1920, Charlie Chaplin was one of the biggest movie stars in the world. The Tramp was, and arguably still is, the most recognizable character to ever grace the screen. [...]

Assessing The Weekend: How Long Until High School Musical 4?

The weekend proved to be a two horse race. Outside of High School Musical 3 and Saw V, the only movie that cracked $2,500 per screen was The Secret Life of Bees. [...]

Assessing The Weekend: I Must Be Doing Something Right

I’m not trying to gloat, really I’m not, but my prediction for Max Payne’s opening weekend was only off $48,199.42. [...]
