How Long Is Long Enough To Start Talking About A Do-Over?

power-buttonThough I have already grown awfully weary of superhero/comic book movies, most of the world has yet to embrace that view. You seemingly can’t hit up any movie website without finding a story about some superhero/comic book movie that is/will be/might hopefully be coming out. Even here, where I’m bitching about those movies.

The movie studios and their comic cohorts are trying to make a movie of every damn comic that’s ever been made. It’s like every obscure comic they can find. Fathom, Jonah Hex, or Preacher anyone? Yeah, apparently those are comic books coming soon to a theater near you.

With both popular and obscure superhero/comic movies in the works and decades of comics [...]

Weekend Report: Watchmen Crushes The Competition

Even though Watchmen fell $13 million short of my $68,475,712 prediction, it spanked the competition. Madea Goes to Jail came in second with $8.5 million., so my prediction of no other movie cracking $10 million was pretty astute. In fact, Watchmen was the only movie in the top 20 to crack $4,000 per theater.

Somehow Taken ended in 3rd place with $7 million. That’s a real solid number for a movie in it’s sixth week. The Jonas Brother’s Concert, last week’s number two (and will always be a number two in my mind), fell off the face of the Earth, only able to make $2.8 million for the weekend. That’s a 77% drop.

The pisspoor performer of the weekend was a very deserving Friday [...]

Weekend Predictions: 03-06-09

watchmenThe question is who’s watching the Watchmen? The answer is damn near everyone since this is the only new wide release this weekend. Every other movie apparently trembles in fear of Watchmen’s greatness.

I’ve never been into comics or their high-minded cousin the graphic novel, or all this superhero nonsense either. Really, it just does nothing for me. If it’s a good movie, then great. If it’s not, then it ain’t much of a surprise. A lot of people are already in love with the movie because they love the graphic novel, but a good source does not a good movie make. Although I haven’t read more handful of comics, I know enough to know [...]

Is Aaron Eckhart As Two-Faced As His Character?

two-face-hospitalBack in September, Aaron Eckhart was unequivocal in his statement that Harvey Dent/Two-Face would not be returning for a sequel to The Dark Knight. He said the character was “dead as a doornail” and “ain’t coming back.”

Either Eckhart spoke too soon (even thought he did consult director Christopher Nolan) or he is as two-faced as his character because he’s changing his tune. He parallels the character’s status with that of it’s onscreen counterpart- not dead, but in a coma. Maybe he’ll pull through, maybe he won’t.

I’ve never had much interest in comics or superheroes, but I liked The Dark Knight well enough. Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker was outstanding. The story was [...]

They’ve Run Out Of Comics To Adapt, The Crow To Be Remade

the-crow-statueThe Crow will be most remembered for the on-set death of Brandon Lee. That’s unfortunate because it is quite an engaging movie with a fantastic performance by Lee. Many thought it would be his breakout role. Instead, just like his father, he will be remembered for dying young and under controversial circumstances.

Lee’s death cast a pall over The Crow that only intensified the brooding, melancholy tone and Gothic imagery. It’s generally well regarded and has a league of devoted fans. It made nearly $100 million at the box office and spawned four sequels.

So what does that mean? Well, it’s time for a do-over, of course. Stephen Norrington (Blade, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) [...]

By Crom! Brett Ratner Has A New Franchise To Kill

Is it just a coincidence that Brett Ratner’s last name sounds an awful lot like Rat Turd? Maybe his ineptitude isn’t his fault and that phonetic relation has caused him to take on personality traits not of his last name, but those associated with rat turds. [...]

Steve Rogers Movie In The Works?

MTV is reporting that actor Derek Luke got a little loosed lipped in an interview about Miracle at St. Anna and mentioned he heard Will Smith was offered the lead in a new Captain America movie. Captain America is Steve Rogers’ extremely patriotic alter ego. Of course it’s a baseless rumor at this point, unless you consider Derek Luke a primary source with access to casting info. [...]

And Introducing… Superman

According to Box Office Mojo, it had a worldwide theatrical take of $391 million. That sounds good enough, but you can tell the studio expected much bigger things since they invested $270 million in the production. $120 million net (not including advertising costs) at the box office is just not getting it done. [...]
