The Happening aka The Crappening

by Furious
February 11th, 2009

the-crappeningRegardless of the warnings I received, I was bound and determined to see The Happening. There’s no way, I said, that it can be as bad as everyone says. They’re all jaded because of M. Night Shyamalan’s undying love of the twist ending, that’s all. I’ll see it and enjoy it, just like his under-appreciated The Village. The Lady in the Water, that was just an anomaly. Shyamalan’s cup of hubris had runneth over. Things could only get better.

After seeing The Crappening, I really wish I would have heeded those warnings. This has to be one of the worst movies I’ve seen by a director with as much talent as Shyamalan. It was bad bad bad. I’m not even sure where to begin.

The title The Happening sounds like a joke. Something so blunt and generic that you’d expect this to

by Furious
December 23rd, 2008

santa-claus-conquers-the-martiansI’ve been wanting to get this up as the Movie of the Week for a while, but I had to force myself to wait until Christmas. Not only is this a great holiday movie, it’s also always near the top of worst movie ever made lists.

Nearly everything about the movie is bad. Odd story, bad acting, worse costumes, absent production values, and uncomfortable scenes between Santa and the kids. The only thing that could draw any compliments would be the inclusion of some stock footage. It doesn’t make the movie any better, but it doesn’t make it worse, either.

The children of Mars are looking for something to relieve the boredom of Martian life, where all the knowledge they’ll ever need is fed into their heads and they have no individuality. But parents notice the kids love watching Earth TV, where they

by Furious
October 13th, 2008

The only reason the “worst movie” conversation has been dominated by Plan 9 from Outer Space is because not enough people have seen Manos: The Hands of Fate.
