Unbeknownst To Him, Dennis Quaid’s Career Is On Fire

dennis-quaidDennis Quaid gets a lot of work. A damn lot of work, but it’s not like he’s the draw he once was. He’s gone from “let’s see this Dennis Quaid movie” to “oh, Dennis Quaid is in this movie.” It’s not good when a career resurgence consists of Meg Ryan making you into a cuckold.

Whilst discovering the bestowment upon Michael Bay of a possibly prestigious/possibly dubious award from ShoWest, I also perused the other award winners, such as Chris Pine (who?) as the Male Star of Tomorrow and Bradley Cooper (who?) as the Comedy Star of the Year. But they gave Michael Caine the Lifetime Achievement Award, so it’s not like they’re completely idiotic.

Like Michael Bay’s Head Needs To Be Any Bigger

michael-bayShoWest is a big annual convention put on by the Nielson Film Group, the people behind such industry rags as Film Journal International and The Hollywood Reporter. It’s a big fancy trade show for those in the cinema exhibition and distribution community: distributors, theater owners, and the like.

As we all know, one of the traits common to all in the movie business is the love of showering each other with awards. And ShoWest is definitely no exception, bestowing no less than eight awards each year. But based on the recipients, I’m not entirely sure how much prestige is attached to the awards, though I highly doubt they ever get turned down.

This year’s winner [...]

I Thought I Tuned In For The Oscars, Not The Tonys

king-oscarIf you count 5 years as a long time, then last night I broke a longstanding tradition- I watched the Academy Awards. On February 29, 2004, as The Return of the King was named Best Picture, I realized that this whole ceremony really didn’t do anything to enrich my life or even keep me distracted from general perils of my life. Not only that, even though I thoroughly enjoyed the conclusion of The Lord of the Rings, it was overwrought and way too full of little Tolkien tidbits that only served to lengthen the run time. The award was only given to recognize the three movies, of which The Fellowship of the Ring was clearly [...]

Does “Best Picture” Really Mean Anything?

oscar-pimpNow that the Academy Award nominations have been announced, there are five more movies that will go down in history as those identified by the most widely respected movie adjudication entity as the best made last year. The nominees for Best Picture are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, and Slumdog Millionaire. None of them will appear on the list of the most successful movies of the year- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button currently sits at number 20 for movies released in 2008, but well short of the top 5 as of the announcement of the nominations. It follows that none of them will be near the top in attendance [...]

Golden Globes Still An Irrelevant Dinner Party

Every year the Hollywood Foreign Press Association likes to invite a bunch of celebrities over so the world can watch a bunch of famous people get drunk and pal around. They have celebrities that generally have no reason to be at an awards show present awards to the other celebrities. It’s like a class reunion were only the people that were cool in high school show up and give each other awards for how cool they were.

Now, the Golden Globes aren’t really that much different from any awards show, outside of it being more of an awards dinner. Few of the nominations are based on merit, and fewer so the winners. That’s how a lot of awards programs go, but the HFPA has [...]

Bride Wars Fallout Begins, Anne Hathaway Stripped Of Golden Globe

anne-hathaway-ghostSure the Golden Globe Award winners won’t be announced until the broadcast on Sunday. We shouldn’t really know the winners until then, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association may have let one slip.

Yesterday a spiffy gold star popped up next to Anne Hathaway’s name on the Golden Globe nominees website, indicating she had won the award. It was a gaffe, but as long as they didn’t reveal all the winners, people will still watch.

Shortly after the generally abhorred Bride Wars began screening, the star next to Hathaway’s name disappeared. The HFPA won’t comment on the star, but the obvious connection is that Hathaway had won the award for Best Performance by an Actress [...]

Oscars Might Be Worth Watching

I used to watch the Academy Awards religiously. But I stopped watching them as of 2005. The predictability of the winners, celebrity idolization, and grating Tonight Show format created a perfect storm of disgust, so I just read about the winners the next day.

The rumor is that this year the producers are going to chose a non-comedian to host and dump the intro monologue/song-and-dance. This is great news! The format is tired and the jokes always either childish or ego-stroking. Other than to stretch the show out to sell more advertising, I never really saw the point of the big comedy segments. It almost got the feel of a variety show at times.

They [...]

Golden Globe Noms Are Out

golden globes awards signsThis year’s Golden Globe nominations are out. Since studios release their award hopefuls at the end of the year so they’re fresh in everyone’s head, it’s no surprise that the list is filled with movies that have been working the festivals but have yet to get a general release. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has a tendency to reward those who’ve put in an effort to win an award, so it’s not much of a surprise.

What will surprise many people, and possibly bring the Internet to a standstill, is that The Dark Knight only got one nomination. All the people who have been touting this as the most amazingly deep and [...]
