Not a bad rule of thumb. It's funny, probably the exact opposite is true for most kids under twelve.

It wasn't a good year for dogs quality-wise, but the lowest grossing of the three is Beverly Hills Chihuahua, which is presently at $94 million in its 15th week. Obviously some twisted souls are enjoying them.

I have a general rule: if the name of an animal is the title of the movie, or in the title, then the move is going to be crap. Now there are probably some notable exeptions, but I think overall the rule is pretty solid. See Air-Bud, Beethoven's 1 through 15, Paulie, and any number of others. (some exceptions: Babe, Free Willy)
Marley and Me was able to break free of this for the most part, at least from my opinion of the movie. It helped that the dog, while the title character, was not the point of the movie. It turned out to be the kind of movie i could recommend to my parents.
Bolt, on the other hand, I refuse to see, even IN-3D!!!. Travolta as a dog doesn't seem like a character I'd beliieve in, so no Bolt, and definitely no dancing chihuahuas either.
That makes last yeah 1 for 3 in dog movies...not a good record for canine cinema.
