Public Domain Movie Of The Week: The Fast And The Furious

So, The Fast and the Furious was made in 1955 and bears no relation to the 2001 movie of the same name. The first The Fast and the Furious is about a man named Frank (John Ireland) who escapes from prison after being convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. He kidnaps Connie (Dorothy Malone), a race car driver, who was recently banned from a California to Mexico race because, like most exciting things in 1955, the race was deemed too dangerous for women. Frank uses the race as a cover as he attempts to drive himself and Connie to Mexico, and freedom.

There are some decent race scenes featuring (what are now) classic cars- Jaguars, Porsches, Ferraris, Aston Martins. Every once in a while the script perks up just enough to keep you somewhat interested, but it’s a low-budget, amateurish affair. Per imdb, this was the third of 385 projects Roger Corman produced. While 2001′s The Fast and the Furious took the name and not the plot (instead taking that from Point Break), the Charlie Sheen-Kristy Swanson movie The Chase ripped off the plot and gave it a new name.
