Public Domain Movie Of The Week: Manos: The Hands Of Fate

So, this week’s movie is Manos: The Hands of Fate. The conversation about the worst movie ever made has traditionally been dominated by Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space. It’s bad, BAD bad, but at least Wood had an idea about what he was doing. He failed miserably but he had big dreams. And you have to give the guy some credit for trying- he got back in the saddle each time he threw himself off.

The only reason the conversation has been dominated by Plan 9 is because not enough people have seen Manos. It is truly bad. Not good-bad, not ridiculous-bad, no, it’s gone all the way to ludicrous-bad. As each inept scene unfolds, you ask yourself “Didn’t anyone realize how stupid this is?” And it’s every moment, from the god-awfully framed opening shot to the end of the credits, when the “The End?” shows up after the cast and crew credits, but before the thank you to El Paso. How is it possible to screw up “The End”?

If you enjoy the occasional bad movie, this is the Kobe beef of bad movies. Unfortunately, this is a terrible version of the movie, but it was the best I find to stream. If you want to download your own copy (who wouldn’t want to), you can find a much better version on just about any torrent site, and since it’s in the public domain, fear no reprisal from the RIAA.
