A Day At The Races

So, if Seabiscuit didn’t satiate your hunger for horse biopics, there’s good news for you. It looks like ESPN’s 35th greatest North American athlete will soon be thundering down the stretch. According to Variety, Randall Wallace (last seen directing We Were Soldiers) has been tapped to bring the story of Secretariat to the big screen.

I think the world is ready for a feelgood horse racing story. Since Smarty Jones became a celebrity during his Triple Crown bid in 2004, there haven’t been many good stories to come out of horse racing, and the recent deaths of Barbaro and Eight Belles, both resulting from injuries sustained on the track, have made many people question the ethics of Thoroughbred racing and breeding. Hopefully Secretariat’s incredible performances during his Triple Crown win can make us remember that there are good, even inspirational, stories as well.
