You Unlock This Door With The Key Of Imagination

[imdb The Twilight Zone]So, I’m kind of conflicted over this. It looks like The Twilight Zone will be making another appearance on the big screen, and Appian Way will be producing. Yeah, that’s Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company. He’s claims it’s his favorite show.

On one hand, it’s kind of exciting. The Twilight Zone is one of my favorite shows- I’ve got the whole series on DVD. The stories are still so original and insightful that developing a couple of them into feature-length movies could be really interesting. And looking at Appian Way’s filmography*, it seems pretty solid, so if these were to be made, there would probably be some good people involved.

On the other hand, this is just taking something that’s already been done and reworking it. It’s not exactly a remake, since it’s moving to a new medium and having the story built up, but they could have done something original. Maybe call it The Twilight Zone but use an original story? But I guess it’s possible that couldn’t happen if there’s some legal impediment to using the name without remaking an existing episode. Or maybe I’m just making that up and they don’t want to try too hard.

I’d say the positives outweigh the negatives on this. Although I get rankled by remakes, I feel safe in the knowledge that they couldn’t redo all 156 episodes.

* In looking over Appian’s movies, I came across The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. Call me crazy, but Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t really invoke images of Teddy Roosevelt. With Martin Scorsese tabbed to direct and a writer on board, this thing is on it’s way to becoming reality. Sounds a little miscast to me.
