Decreased development, reduced preproduction costs, a jumping off point for the cast and crew, built-in name recognition. I just find it artistically repugnant. I haven't seen the movie, but I can see where you are coming from. There are many examples of this, which I won't get into because I would be writing a post on your blog, but just saying great putting that point out there.
