Star Wars vs Indiana Jones: Deathmatch!

So, Times Online got a little interview with George Lucas, talking Star Wars and Indiana Jones- sequels, of course! He’s noted for being very private and somewhat reclusive, granting few interviews. He claims he doesn’t give many interviews because he doesn’t make many movies, but I honestly think he doesn’t give many because of his narcissism and tactlessness.

Here are a few of the more interesting bits:

I am the father of our Star Wars movie world…

Then we have the licensing group, which does the games, toys and books, and all that other stuff. I call that the son…

Then we have the third group, the holy ghost, which is the bloggers and fans.

Invoking the Trinity as an analog for the intellectual property he created. Sounds a little God complexy to me. At least he didn’t claim to be all three or to be more popular than Jesus.

Indiana Jones only becomes complicated when you have another two people saying ‘I want it this way’ and ‘I want it that way’, whereas, when I first did Jones, I just said, ‘We’ll do it this way’ — and that was much easier. But now I have to accommodate everybody, because they are all big, successful guys, too, so it’s a little hard on a practical level.

Was there really any question that he wants to call all the shots. Imagine, having to listen to other people’s ideas!

I’m in the future; Steven’s in the past. He’s trying to drag it back to the way they were, I’m trying to push it to a whole different place. So, still we have a sort of tension. This recent one came out of that.

Ah, that’s what happened with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Spielberg wanted to stick with what worked and Lucas wanted to take it to a whole other level, one where they nuke fridges.

Apparently George has a strong desire to make a movie about the Tuskegee Airmen, titled Red Tails:

I’m only going to produce Red Tails — we have a black director

Uh, maybe he could have given us a name, instead of just the skin color?

If I were George, I would probably be pretty scant with the interviews, too.

  • I love it. I think Lucas is genius, but he really should stop now, because Indy was actually really bad. The aliens were totally unnecessary and uncalled for, and of course (as always) having spielberg have a say in it was pretty unhealthy for the indy jones saga. I do applaud them, though, for bringing old movies back into the mix… todays movies just can’t be original maybe with the exception of the bourne series. Oh, and by the way, the guest article is pending. :-)

I guess we shouldn’t hold it against them for trying, but they should have tried harder. Looking forward to the article.
